Do not dump reptiles!!!. A list of UK Reptile Rescues.

A list of Reptile Rescues and animal sanctuaries in the UK. A quick google search threw up these results. I do not know if all are still active nor can i endorse any. Due diligence is needed to check where a surrendered animal goes. There is no excuse for dumping reptiles. It is callous, illegal and totally irresponsible. You are potentially consigning your pet to death. Chaz x

    So, some people, whether breeder's or buyers, are failing in their responsibilities and their pet's are handed over to shelters. Another problem could be, shelters are not, choosing, to get good at marketing/selling the animals they have. Love, is action, as well as a feeling. Anyone, who want's to claim that they love, anything, are lying if they don't back that claim up, with action. On shelters in general, I don't think I would ever need one, as I am willing to rely on family, and be the family that is relied upon, when it comes to emergencies and pets. so I don't feel a strong sense of responsibility to look at shelter animals first, when I want a new pet. But for those who would want to rely on a shelter in an emergency, (especially, hard to care for pets) go there first. Since cost of heating was brought up, people can get snakes that can thrive in their climate. For example, people who live in cooler part's of Europe, could get grass snakes, dice snakes, Russian rat snakes, Korean rat snakes or northern water snakes etc. which are snakes that can handle some cold. Diet is another place to save money, for example, if fish is easier to acquire, and cheaper to buy, than rodent's, North American water snakes, or dice snakes could be best. Or there are egg eating snakes, if small to medium sized egg's are easy to get. Bird snakes, eastern black rat snakes, and tiger rat snakes also seem to readily accept eggs as part of their diet.

    Abit late, but I think that ingrained phobia is natural, I'm a reptile lover and got my snake from you before the covid times and every one who sees her for the first time have a similar response that on 80% of cases goes from a why? Love Nerodia a snake of all snake keeping 2 S.fasciata a male and female together cohab they get along gret mostly feed tilapia with either alternating calcium or b vitamins. Actually they make less mess and more fully digested than mice and I actually cringe at the mice poop more the fish poop is just white chunks to scoop out if they don’t go in the water which I find them to be intelligent so when I feed them fish they know that comes from water so they don’t poop in their large water bowl but they do poop in water when it’s mice almost like to hide the smell or something almost hygienic. A MAJOR POINT about feeding tilapia or any fish(water snakes eat freshwater fish also) is the way they process it, some preservatives are not required to be listed namely I think it’s called tri-poly-phosphates… U MUST ENSURE THERE IS NONE OF THOSE PRESERVATIVES IN YOUR FISH FOR THE SNAKES OR IT WILL KILL THEM!!!! Also wild food has many parasites esp bait shiners they can work but YOU WILL GET PARASITIC WORMS, the water snakes are smart my girl snake fasted for two months and starved the worms out of here while I learned my lessons. They communicate , listen and you will be rewarded. Also i keep multiple smaller fresh water bowls throughout their enclosure as it seems they prefer them over the big soaking pool for drinking, and in case they poop in the big bowl they have non fecal water to drink ,regardless REPLACE ALL WATER BOWLS DAILY!!!! Water Snakes eat twice a week food that only slight bigger than they are round, and once a week the if twice their diameter round food size.

    Just watched this again, having bought a beautiful male juvenile hog island boa from you last December. He's a real beauty, was about 22inches long on arrival, is thriving, and I reckon he's got more brain cells than my four year old female hypomelanistic boa imperator, who has taken more than a year not to be nervous. When he's not hiding at ground level, he's up in his branches. He'd eat till he explodes (as Viperkeeper says about some of his snakes), so I'm being careful to bring him on slowly. Love his prominent eyes. He likes lower temperatures than the other boas I've kept: cool side around 75F or a bit lower.

    I dont think super dooper mutants should take precident over a wild type animal. I personally like my snakes to resemble their wild counterparts & this is my preference. You commented in your white lip python video 'nature got it right', with which I wholeheartedly agree. Surely this applies to the entire community of flora & fauna on the planet as it was created through the ongoing process of natural evolution. This process has stood these animals in good stead until human intervention. I can personally say I'm only drawn more to the boa locales which were mentioned & not the 'common' boa imperator. However, my main interests are in pythonidae & would like to have a pair of Royal pythons, which are extremely undervalued since their respective myriad of mutations have been proliferated. Who should tell me that my OG pairing is any less exciting than a triple (recessive) het, double visual (dominant), scaleless (🤢) reptile that captures someones attention. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think the value of such mutants should be lower & there would be a lot less breeding in general, leaving more appreciation for 'common' wild type animals. This is a market led system currently & no community regulation on those breeding with disregard for the consequences.

    question for you, have you ever heard of 2 male baroni's copulating with each other? I had left my pair with a friend to look after for some time and when i came back he said that one of them had died but he was unsure which was which (they were kept together and were both around the same size, my guess was that he was severely underfeeding them), at the time i had also recently picked up a male blue (which was 3 years old) and seemed a bit smaller than the last one i had left so i had assumed it was a male and female pair on my hands, i had put them together and instantly the blue male started courting the other presumed female. I had left them together for about 2 weeks and would see the blue one courting every single day as long as the lights came on but never witnessed a lock. I decided to separate them yesterday and probe the "female" and to my surprise "she" probed super super deep, about 11 subcaudal scales!!! Any ideas what may be happening here? Do i happen to just have a female with a freakishly long probe depth or do i in fact have 2 males? I have never seen them combat nor have i seen the green one do the usually run and thrash crazily all over the enclosure (as i have seen happen when 2 males of other species were put together on accident)

    I bought a male albino as p.molurus. He is orange and has a well-defined pattern on his head which is a feature of bivittatus, while molurus is supposed to have a spot on the head which is faded. At the same time my boy is 65 cm long at the age of 6 months which is too small for a python bivittatus of his age. I’m not sure any more.

    I am almost certain what you have there are two Mexican black kingsnakes that have retained a bit of the pattern of the splendida to which they are a subspecies. Eastern black kingsnakes, even the blackest ones, never have fully black heads to my knowledge - they always have the white hatching on the labial scales, i believe this to be the most obvious way to tell the two apart in captivity. Also, while we don't see a closeup here of the head and neck, i believe i can make out a trace of the "sockhead" effect of the splendida (or at least the ones from western Texas through Arizona), another diagnostic trait, as though the head and neck were dipped in black ink. Finally, although it is a bit hard to make out, i believe the eyes on these are fully black. In the nigra, even the blackest ones retain some light areas of the eye so the pupil is easily seen. Splendida nigrita is indeed what i believe you have here, the Mexican black kingsnake. Entirely black heads and a sock-pattern visible.

  • @tozobozo4142
    @tozobozo4142 3 місяці тому

    That's actually either a (very large) splendida splendida (Desert) kingsnake from the zone of southernmost Arizona where they exibit the overlapping influences of splendida negrita (Mexican black) and the "yumensis" (Yuma) phase of the the California kingsnakes, or a captive crossed animal derived from a splendida or splendida negrita, perhaps the latter crossed with an Eastern kingsnake, which would explain the size. Although it's not impossible for a desert or Mexican black king to get that large, just unusual, and more common for a California king to get that large. It's not an eastern (getula getula) kingsnake at any rate i'm afraid. (Splendida kingsnakes not uncommonly sport a chain pattern like we see here - as occasionally do yumensis Cal kings - and i once had a pet shop owner try to interest me in buying a splendida insisting it was "an eastern-chain kingsnake" - it was not.) It's a beautiful and impressive snake at any rate. Cheers, i enjoy your channel.

    FYI, i live in southern NJ, a quick ride away from the pine barrens....my dad lives in the pines and i hike/ ride my bicycle there regularly. Spent a summer there at camp as a child. The Pine Barrens is a largely undeveloped forest made up primarily of runty, long-needled conifers we call "scrub pines." It's considered to be a very unique ecosystem, but there are very similar smaller pine forests in the sandhills of South Carolina....the Pine Barrens treefrog, Hyla andersoni, lives in the Jersey pine barrens and the SC sandhill region in the northestern end of the state. But, anyway, the NJ pine barrens sit atop a massive aquifer. Despite the ubiquitous presence of white quartz sand (the locals call it "sugar sand;" it is similar to what one finds on a beach or in a desert....) and the fact that things can seem quite dry b/c the sand drains so quickly, the pine barrens full of bogs, springs, streams, rivers, ponds, etc. The pine barrens are the home of the cranberry bogs that provide most of the cranberries for the US. My point is, the pine barrens has no shortage of water except in times of extreme draught (common in the 1990s/2000s, not so much nowadays) and whenever i see colubrids wild in the pines, they are within a fairly short distance from the dark waters of the pine barrens, which is colored like tea from the plentiful cedar tannins and iron ore in the region.

    Very very analysis and reasonable response to the issues. The MSM are predominantly not run by upstanding individuals, they're about causing mayhem and division, creating distrust and fear and they do it well because that's their job. Their content is about stirring things up of course because not only will it get them views, but it will hurt peoples wellbeing and that's a wonderful recipe for more 'story telling' where narratives can be as salacious as you put it as they desire. Thank you for being a voice for reptile keepers. It means a lot.

    One of my favourite Snakes. I kept and bred them years ago but I haven't seen any for quite a long time except for the Liquorice stick or white sided morphs. One pair I had were completely black with the white chin and underside. They were incredibly handsome Snakes and easily handled and cared for. I also kept and bred Everglades at the same time (1990s) and they were real beauties as well and just as easily cared for as the Black. Eastern Fox Snakes, which I have a pair of hatchlings are very tough species from North Eastern United States and Southern Canada around the Great Lakes area.
